What degree and level of degree should I work for when my main focus is creative writing :fiction?
and any school college recommendations would be helpful as well. I'm in the state of Michigan.
What are some good exercises for creative writing?
Writers do many types of quick write exercises before working on something big like a book. What are some good ones that you can think of? I prefer ideas for creative writing only.
How is my creative writing? I tried to write a third person story for the first time about a quiz contest.?
I am a newbie and this story just describes a scene when i went to a quiz. Third Person viewpoint.This was one of the busiest months for Max. He was now more interested in social events so he had registered his name in 2 competitions. The first one to happen was the quiz competition. Reading through internet pages, gk books and newspapers, magazines, he tried best to grasp all he can. The competition was inter school level so he knew it was not going to be easy. With him were 2 more senior high, final year science students. He didnt meet them until the quiz day. Max was not very confident about his knowledge. And so on the quiz day announcements were made as soon as everyone reached the school. There were lots of students going to participate in different competitions. As Max reached the gathering place, he saw 20 30 students all getting ready for their tasks. Some people reading from books, some people reciting their essays. But the most eye catching the dancers who were dressed as native Indian people. They had long wooden rods and big drum like things with them. Then a teacher came and asked, " Hey which competition have you participated in? May i know?" " Yes mam, i have participated in quiz competition" Max said politely. " Alright, stay with those 2 people, and best of luck" the teacher said with a smile. In all these happenings Max was feeling an unusual joy. A joy of togetherness. A joy of competitiveness. Which he never got in multiplayer games or long chats on internet.And so Max approached the two guys and told them about himself. The other 2 quizmates were Yath and Sid. " Hmm so you are a science student? You should do well. Here take this book and start reading all geography facts" Sid handed over the book to Max.Urgh geography? I hate it, Max said to himself. But for first time in his life, he wanted to read those. In the crowd of students, he wanted to win. He wanted a good healthy competition. He was looking forward to winning the quiz. After a while they all sat in a bus and reached the host school. " Its pretty big. And crowdy too" Max said in excitement as he saw students from different schools with different uniforms. Then all three of them were separated from their school group as they reached the quiz room. But they found out the quiz had already started They were late " Please come students. Here take this sheet and attempt the questions. You have 15 minutes to attempt these" The teacher inside explained as we were looking from outside. Max was amazed to see so many teams working together. " Lets go " Yath said. There was immense confidence in his voice. " What is the real name of dalai lama?" Yath read. " How is someone supposed to know this?" Max asks stupidly." Look lets attempt the questions that we know first" Sid assured.Which musical instrument is often called 88?" Hey piano has 88 keys so it should be called 88" Max exclaimed in a confident voice. " Hey Hey speak slowly. Other teams may listen our answers.... And yes you are right " Yath said in low volume. After attempting 2 3 more questions correctly, Max was in sheer delight. He had a whole new feeling. He felt as if he was not useless anymore. " I am loving this quiz" Max said to himself.After all the attempting they reached the last question." There is only one person in the world who is an escopetarrist. What does an escopetarrist do?" Max read." Hmm no idea" Yath murmered. " E scope tarrist..." Max said as he tried to break down the word " maybe someone looking for e scope. Environmental scope i mean. Looking to conserve environment maybe" " It has no negative marking. Lets go with this. We dont have any more time" Yath said as he wrote the answer. And then it was time for wait. Wait till the sheets were checked. Max saw as yath and Sid were discussing answers from other schools. Hey they are rivals. What are you doing?? Max said to himself. " What do you think will we win?" Max asks. " Be confident. We did our best. Yath assures. Then the teacher comes in and there is silence all around. The teacher announces the 8 teams for finals.And there was no school no. 8which meant Max's team lost. There was silence for some moments. But Max didnt feel bad. " Hey we did our best guys. We came and we learned a lot of things. It was fun" Max said confidently. " Yeah, maybe" Yath said in an unsatisfied voice. The teams were told to wait for some more time.Then he teacher comes in and invites all the teams to watch out the finals. And it was one of the best experiences for Max. HE saw all the 8 teams and praised them for their knowledge. After they were leaving the school, he asks " Hey arent you 2 satisfied? I mean those 8 teams were really good and deserved it finally "
Any free creative writing contests?
Does anyone know any creative fiction, science fiction, etc. contests that win big money? I've written since I was 10, and my teacher recently told me to find some writing contests. I also need the money to get a new laptop. My dad is going to leave no further explanation and he's decided to take this one I'm using. Thanks in advance

Afraid of other creative writing students stealing my ideas?
I do creative writing at University, next semester we begin properly writing and then we're required to read out our work aloud to the group, about 40 other students. We have to write a piece a week or more but the thing is I dont want any of my classmates to steal my ideas...and some are the type who would. So I've like come up with this weird thing were if I keep all of my best ideas to myself to be left hidden until I finish university and try to publish them and instead I hand in lesser ideas so nobody will steal my good ones. I know some alot of the students steal others ideas as my friend read out he story were the main character was an elderly woman...the next class 4 people had stories in about elderly women lol its ridiculous but required to real aloud our work to the class and I dont see the point if people like that are going to take ideas from others and put their name on it. What should I do? and I dont want to limit my imagination either to save my ideas from being stolen, I feel like Im lessening myself which is stupidin answer to " Crone" ...I have many creative ideas and more and more come to me because I am a creative person, I paint and sell photography part time. The reason why I worry about them ideas being stolen is because they are mine? I have created them and yes, they are original and it is very possible to come up with original stories, you were unnecessarily negative and judgemental, nothing wrong with protecting my hard work
Is it a good idea to join a creative writing class to achieve my ambition?
I don't dare go, because I believe they may think I'm thick , because my ability to remember how to spell words is highly impossible... What would you do if you were me ? I want to go but I'm so frightened . Philip , Spellchecker just told me I have 34 miss spellings , I told it to get lost and go Train your brain I was sure it was taking the P ss out of me until everyone was told the same LOL Thanks Mark I never fishing for complements about my writing. I get to many about the way I look Credit where Credit's due I suppose lol
Is there anyone out there who has a passion for reading and creative writing?
The downside is that you have terrible short attention span, but you don't want to give up on what you love, its just your attention span is really low and you just can't go on anymore with concentrating. Also you procrastinate half the time and you have to go through forcing yourself to stay on track and even that is hard. So tell me how do you manage to overcome it and keep on moving? You want to get started on reading your book you'll read it but there is only so far you can go. The same pertains to writing, where you do everything else instead of actually starting the story. Its not writers block far as creative writing, its just you can't focus and get easily distracted. What do you do if you're in this terrible situation?
How important are grammatical rules in creative writing?
I don't mean the whole their, there, they're thing. That makes sense. But things that word always pulls you up on in writing, like fragments of sentences. I mean if you changed all of those things the story wouldn't flow very well.Or should I just find a better way to write those ideas?Just interested in opinions.
Websites for creative writing?
I am trying to find a writing website to keep my projects because I often like to write where I have not brought my laptop, like, you know, school. I use figment, but I don't like that you have to publish your stories to the entire internet, as I really like my current story, and don't want to share it, since I feel like I may one day pursue publishing it.. I feel uncomfortable keeping it on a flash drive as I am highly prone to misplacing things. Thanks
Read my creative writing? Based on a dream I had this morning.?
Today is 04 10 2012 I feel incredibly sad and lonely and isolated and locked up and trapped nowadays.I dreamed that we had three houses. They all had front doors, and back doors. Back doors that led to the beautiful, full, deep, and mysterious forests, in the back of my houses. Tall, overlooming, green trees, sunlight streaming in, the beautiful forest floor. But at each house, I would, with a wary and cautious hand, no paranoia . paranoid hands . I would lock the back doors up with an inexplicable fear. I was afraid someone would steal my money. My family s money. I thought, I better lock these doors up before someone comes in and steals my family s money Haha. I don t know. To dream that you are locking the door suggests that you are closing yourself off from others. You are hesitant in letting others in and revealing your feelings. It is indicative of some fear and low self worth. Now I m wondering if I really locked those doors because I was afraid of people coming in. Coming in my house, coming in my soul, discovering who I was.Discovering who I was, and not liking it? I am an enigma. Even in my own eyes, I am a mysterious, maze reminding puzzle, and I don t understand myself. I sit there on the carpet floor and I try to solve the puzzle, throwing the pieces this way and that and trying to force them together in some way that makes some vague sense, trying to force it together, but it won t work. I throw my hands up in frustration and pound my fists to the floor, anger, frustration, impatience frustrated because Why do other people seem to get it, why does everything else seem to work out for everyone, but this, for me? Why? Why? The only obstacle to my happiness could be this. Not school, not family, not life, not anything, but me, because I am my only obstacle Oh, terrible, terrible terrible .Maybe, one day I ll approach the back door and hurriedly, with a paranoid hand, begin locking the door clickety click click rattle of the doorknob. Maybe I ll linger, maybe my eyes will roam over the beautiful forest and the beautiful trees and the sunlight, streaming through. Ah, freedom. Ah, happiness. Ah life and air and freedom and peace and finally, being free. Maybe I ll stop, wide eyes breathing hard thinking And maybe I ll break free. I ll throw that door away behind me and leap out of the house, take one step, one foot in front of the other and never look back, never look back, never look back. Hair flying fast, trees flying past me, and I ll never look back, I tell you.I ll never look back.The forest is beautiful. It is waiting for me. And one day, I ll meet you in that beautiful forest. The trees are beautiful. They re calling my name. Forest To dream that you are in or walking through the forest signifies a transitional phase. Follow your instincts. Alternatively, it indicates that you want to escape to a simpler way of life. You are feeling weighed down by the demands of your life.To dream that you are lost in a forest indicates that you are searching through your unconscious for a better understanding of yourself.To dream of a forest fire indicates that transformation and regeneration is only possible through some hardships. Alternatively, it suggests that your anger is out of control it is affecting those around you.

Creative writing skills?
Ever since a young age I have been into writing stories. Recently I have been taking creative writing classes in my college. One of my most certain strengths is dialogue. I am a very good auditory learner and I discover through hearing so it's not a surprise that my dialogue is a strength. However, one of my weaknesses in writing is describing the visual stuff. I tend load and tell things instead of showing. I guess I try to compensate for my lack of visual skills. Idk are there any excercises where I can improve describing skills to seem natural to what the character is experiencing? Instead of loading it with flowery imagery purple prose ?
